| Physical Changes in adolescence |
Although adolescence can be a very hard stage for most human beings, now I understand why adolescents go through all these situations. Based on the article "The Self, Identity, Emotion, and Personality". I was able to find out the scientific reasons for such stage which is full of ups and downs. According to Susan Harter, "The contemporaty perspective on the self emphasizes the construction of multiple self-representations across different relational context". that is, basically the changing view that adolescents are going through since they are looking for a specific role in a specific group, that is why adolescents behave in different ways throughout these period such as tryng to be part of new popular trends, acting different in order to get a gir/boy's attention, having some sort of rebellion with parents and teachers, listening new music, having new haircuts. Moreover, Erik Erikson researched the Identity versus Identity Confusion and he explained that " the identity versus identity confusion occurs during adolescence. at this time, individuals are faced with deciding who they are, what they are all about, and where they are going in life". As we can see, Erikson was trying to say that teenagers are trying to decide what they are and what they are going to be; so, this hughe dilema makes them have some sort of confusion affecting them in all senses.
As a teacher I would like to help my adolescent students by helping them with this important decition which is deciding what they are and where they are going to. First, I think that in order to be able to help adolescent students they have to trust in you as a teacher in order to become their friend; then, I would try to make them see how important is to take good decitions during this period since a bad decition may affect them the rest of their life, third, make them see how important school is since it is the key for succes. I think that these three aspects are important and as teenagers students have to take them into account at the time of making decitions.

Hello Tomas. I totally agree with you, all adolescents experience big physical and psychosocial changes which sometimes may result as a "problem" for teens. Regarding to what you mentioned about self- representations teens deal with, I think this aspect is really important for the reason that in adolescence, teens look to understand who they really are and who they want to be, which sometimes this decision is influenced by their environment ; even though, adolescents want to be part of a certain group in order to be accepted and get their own identity, as we did when we were teens. That´s why in adolescence, teens start experiencing new things such as music, sports, and changing their look, etc. I do agree with you about Erickson´s theory becase I remember when I was a teen I did not care too much about my future and who I wanted to be in the society. I consider this “confusion” is totally normal because we have to remember that in this stage the brain and the body is in a transition where teens are not child anymore and they are becoming adults. Finally, I like how you are thinking in order to help your adolescent students. I also consider that we need to help them to trust is us in order to make them feel confident. I think we need to be a guide more than a friend to them.
ResponderEliminarHello Brenda,
ResponderEliminarFirst of all, Thanks for your comments!
It is so nice that you shared my ideals in the teacher's role. Second, As Erickson's theory stated on his identity vs identity confusion theory, individuals are faced with deciding who they are, what they are all about, and where they are going in life. So, adolescents go through a whole changing process in which they are discovering their own identity and since they are not totally sure about how to behave, they adopt different behaviors depending on the situation that they are facing most of the times.
Tomas: This time I want to encourage you to use this information not only as a teacher but as a father; I Know you are raising a boy and statitics show that this gender tends to mess a little more with adolesce issues.
ResponderEliminarOn the other hand, your expectations as a teacher are the ideal ones but you have to be careful and keep in mind that you are not just another pal, your students have to see you as a mentor and a guide. Someone that understands without judging and guides instead of fixing their situations.
Good luck Tomas.
